word about drying clothes

Hey you guys I just happened ot have a thought. There are actually 3
schools of thought with regards to drying clothes...one of course is
jut throw them in the dryer and run up a power bill which is going to
go up 45 % for those of us living in central Illinois this winter so
therefore not an option at my hourse.#2 Dry them outside...fold and put
away...for those of you who have not done this in many years there is
nothinglike getting into bed at nite onto sheets that are sun
dried...gotta love it. #3 What if you live in apt? I don t live in
an apt but there have been drier breakdowns in my lifetime with no
money for repairs. What I did was wash the clothes then shake them out
and hang them on hangers and hang them up on the door frames...it will
add moisture to a dry home in the winter...laundry detergent smeels
good...in the morning put them away....acutally there is a #4....when I
remarried a few years ago my husband did not like the stiffness of
towels and underwear that were line dried so I compromised.I dry my
things outside...then...toss them in the drier for maybe 5 minutes at
tops. Everything is fluffed up and I did not spend an hour per load
running the drier. Does anyone else have more thoughts on this

I can see where you think this is a good thing to dry clothes outside but let me give you another side. I have major enviornmental allergies as does our whole family. Even if my electric was going up 45% I would still use my dryer. My husband and I have no insurance so the price of going to the Dr. is going to be more than the extra electricity. Yes I know she is talking about saving money and so am I. By the time I go to my Dr. and buy a prescription it would be $150 and that is just going once. I do not see how drying clothes in the house and my electric bill going up is going to be that much. Patti

Yes I have had that response from my friends over the years that theythink it won t mean that much on the elctric bill but when you add up the savings over a year it is alot...I was trying to support my kids on 211.00 a week so it really meant a lot to me. We are lucky tho...no allergies tho in my family because needless to say if there had been this would definitely not be a good option. I talked to the power company and they ran the numberss for me and it came to about 20.00 a month at that time. That was a lot of money to me. Lots of mac and cheese and Aldi veggies...lol. I realize this tip is not for everyone but maybe it will help someone. Hugs Susan

I have terrible allergies and so do my kids (our allergist calls us "the allergic ones ) and I dry our clothes outside in the warm weather. Everyone loves the fresh smell and no one has reactions. BUT, one must consider where one lives and if you live in a development with a housing association, this may be taboo. Some will allow it with strict adherence guidelines.

My husband wears a uniform to work and part of it consists of some heavy colored jeans (not blue). They take forever to dry! I hung a retractable clothesline in our laundry room. I dry a couple of them so he can get to work for a couple of days until the ones that are hanging dry.

I have similar situation. Some people's furnaces have basement vents. If you hang a line, the warm air should dry them, if you are able to plan ahead.

Our dryer went defunct in the spring, so I am feelin' ya sister!

I can ask. It can't hurt. Not too many places will let you pay what you can, when you can anymore. Too many are real anxious to turn you over to a collection agency.

I will be looking for a pediatric dentist for my son in times to come.

Rule of thumb when using any major appliance............to save on the electric bill....run the dishwasher, washer, dryer etc...after 8 p.m......power is cheaper between the off hours of 8 p.m. & 8 a.m.

Make sure you double check with your power company first, it varies
with each supplier. In Canada for instance one province its only
after midnight (till 8 am), and in the province we currently live
there is no discount as they are the cheapest rates in the country
anyway. I used to think this as well, but with dh being an
electrician he showed me on the power co's website that it wasn't so
where we lived

How does the electric company know when you have used electricity? We have 1 meter and they read it and all electrical power is the same price here. Patti
