Default New Thread: What has your Dad Taught you?

My Dadhas always been frugal and found ways to make extra money over the years to afford us all of the little extras when I was growing up in Northern Michigan. He'll be retiring next year from his factory job where he has put in over 35 years already. Over the years he found and hauled in scrap metal for extra money... cut cedar boughs in the fall and sold it to a local company that makes Christmas wreaths and garland... He taught himself to design and make custom knives and sheaths to sell (big with the local hunters)... Up until a few years ago he has built custom log furniture to sell. He has always believed in saving up and paying cash for large purchases or vacations, etc... and only using credit sparingly or for big ticket items (car, mortgage) but paying it down or off as quickly as possible. The two biggest things I guess I've learned from him are: if it's worth having, it's
worth waiting and saving for... and hard work will get you what you need in life. Even my Dad with his financial savvy, admits that it's a lot harder now days for young married couples with children to make ends meet. So, while my husband and I strive to be as financially adept as my father, it is difficult to have the discipline to widdle down bills and save, save, save. I'm trying hard to live up to my Dad's fine example. Thanks for the great topic! ~ Wendy in MI

My dad taught me to treat everyone with respect no matter their race,

religion, or whatever else makes them different from me. We live

about 35 miles from one of the poorest areas in the US (Pine Ridge,

SD)and my dad worked for years as a lawyer for different people and

agencies. (However, now he is a photographer, but that is a different

story. ) I learned that all people are the same from my dad. So now

I have a greater respect for someone who is "different" than me and I

can appreciate our differences and embrace them.

He also taught me how to drive a stick shift and that I can do

anything I put my mind to.

Strange, I also didn't know my father until about 15 years ago. He also left,

and had schizophrenia. Sadly, I wish that I had not gone to the trouble of

looking him up. He is strange, cruel and downright mean. Some people in his

family say it is because he was a POW, and maybe so, but I will not subject my

family to his rants and cruelty. So I choose not to speak to him. Last time we

spoke was 3 years ago.

Ironic you mention your father's illness. I recently completed my

research and presented it to my chair and program and completed my paper

on Mental Illness in the Workplace:What do employers do when faced with

an employee with mental illness? (it also includes general info about

mental illness).... Unfortunately, it is not uncommon (through MUCH

research and personal experience with others)for individuals with mental

illness to act as you describe.--the strangeness or unwanted comments

are not uncommon in various forms of mental illness and many do not

understand how it affects an individual, as well as those on the

receiving end...my heart goes out to you....

Mental illness IMPAIRS one's thinking, emotions, their ability to

socialize, and their daily tasks. ~trina~

I can send a copy to those interested.

BTW, doing this paper means I am able to officially graduate this SAT

With my Masters in Science in Leadership and Management. YEAHHH!!!!!

Now I really gotta budget with school loans LOL ;o)

Default New Thread: What has your Dad Taught you?

Hello,

My dad taught me to be nice to people, to respect them, to be honest, (I remember a time when the man on the cafe gave change for a 2000 "escudos" (aprox 10 dollars) when I paid with 1000 and my dad made me go back to deliver the extra note). He taught me also to be polite to people, and to say good morning and good afternoon, whenever I enter a place. As a master cook he also taught me how to turn crepes (more thin pancankes) with my hand without burning. He also taught me a remedy for flu wich is hot "aguardente" (I don't know if you have something like that, but it's a distilled alcoholic drink) with lots of sugar.

Being free of debt makes a lot of things easier to do. Financially anyhow. I think it also gives you much better peace of mind (not constantly worrying about bills, etc.) Herlean
