Making more time

Posted 09-29-2008 at 11:56 AM by wilbe95
I spent the weekend cooking. It was so much fun. It didn't really take me any extra time actually will save time in the end. I made two pounds of mac and cheese from scratch then packaged it up into ziploc type bags in individual bags so that I will have quick food for the boys. Some nights they have less than 30 minutes to eat and change clothes before we are off to the next activity. They do get distracted pretty easy so the less time to have the food ready the better. I also made up a huge pot of stew and have it packaged in the freezer to be able to pull out to put in the oven so when we get home from the activity they can change and sit down to eat.

The boys loved helping each one got to make their own pan of mac and cheese. I have one who wants no flavors but mac and cheese, and one who likes some of the herbs and another who loves lots of flavor. We made up three pans and each added what they wanted. I did write down for them all of the different things we added and directions and I am working on making them each their own little cookbook of their favorites. It will be something that they can use when they grow up. I don't want them to torment a wife with "you don't make it like my mom". This way they can make it themselves.

Have a great day.

Kim,
What a busy weekend you had. But as you say it was fun. You have a wonderful idea with them each having their own cookbook too.

Sometimes I have a hard time with the recipes we do up for their cookbooks. My Grandmother taught me to cook and I have this nasty habit of not measuring and adding different things at different times depending on my mood. We have had to remake foods at a later time to get the right flavor for the right boy. But you never know what the future will hold and it just would not be fair to assume that they will marry a girl who cooks or for that matter even marry-diffrent world today.
Thanks,
Kim

Kim,
You don't have a bad habit do you? (of not measuring and adding different things at different times depending on your mood). I was taught the same way. At least you are taking the time now to write those old time favorite recipes down. That is the way I was taught to can also. alittle of this and pinch of that.
The only thing I use my measuring cups/spoons, for is in the baking dept. (that's a science there). Don't want to make spanky food.

My most treasured cookbook is one that I had all the grandmothers and mothers write in family recipes for me before I was married. My mother taught me to cook the same way, and when I make something I write down what I am doing at the time so if it is a hit, I can recreate it. Alot of times, I even allow my boys to name the recipes. Freezer ready meals are so great. I should send this forum some of mine soon.
