An Epiphany! Don't Buy Snack Foods! Save Cash!

Posted 10-06-2009 at 09:16 PM by DohDohBird
You know, just when you think, "Hey! I've got this frugality thing down pat," you realize you don't!

What was I thinking? Of It's so simple! Stop. Buying. Snack. Foods. Duh!!!

We don't need them!

Our bodies don't need them.

Our wallets don't need them.

Just don't buy them.

So simple!

I cut out snack foods this month and we don't miss them! The kids still have snacks, but they're apples, oranges, grapes, bananas, applesauce, toast, reheated pancakes, nuts, cucumbers, carrots, celery, yogurt, and other healthful foods that are already around the house anyway.

The adults in the house have given up weekday snacking (we're following the No S plan of simplicity eating).

Save money. Save bodies. Say no to snacking.

It works for me.

These are all great snacks for adults as well.

I also keep cereal around, a handful in the afternoon can be a pickmeup that is very much needed some days.

My favorite quickie snack is to make Apple dip (pkg of cream cheese, tablespoon or so brown sugar, tsp ground cinnamon, dash ground cloves, handful finely chopped walnuts) mixed well and put in those little tiny gladware containers (makes the perfect single serving). I make up a bunch of them at a time and stack them in the fridge. Then, when the kids want a quickie snack (or me ) they can grab an apple or carrot sticks and dig in. If you want it a more "dip" like consistency, or to stretch it to make it last, add 1/2 c. sour cream to the above mix and blend well. It's one of my favorites.

I made corn tortilla's and then fried them up to make homemade taco shells. Not only did my family love them instead of the store bought kind they preferred the homemade shells broken up instead of store bought chips. So now if they "have" to have them they make their own! We like to snack on our home made yogurt and carrot/celery sticks and I loved your idea about apple slices! And we are so buried in eggs we keep hard boiled and deviled eggs on hand all the time now.
